BARBERSPAN BIRD SANCTUARY

The Barberspan Bird Sanctuary is a huge 2000 ha body of water located between Delareyville and Sannieshof. The Reserve is a pioneer in ornithological research. Bird Life South Africa has declared it an important national birding site.

Given then that it is also a RAMSAR Convention-accredited wetland of international importance for migratory birds and waterfowl, it is well worth a visit.

BLOEMHOF DAM NATURE RESERVE

The Bloemhof Dam is one of the largest dams in South Africa, covering an area of some 25 000 ha and reaching over 100 km upstream from the dam wall.

BORAKALALO NATIONAL PARK

BOSKOP NATURE RESERVE

Boskop Dam, which is set in 3000 hectare of rolling grasslands, serves as an important recreational destination for the many communities within close proximity.

The reserve is noted for outdoor recreation – apart from angling, opportunities for camping, yachting, canoeing, birding and game viewing are also offered.

BOTSALANO GAME RESERVE

The reserve is located in open Kalahari thornveld. It is used for the breeding of antelope species and other mammals for the stocking of reserves throughout the province. There is an extensive network of roads which are accessible to motorists in most vehicles.

This 5 800 ha game reserve is situated 18 km north from the Ramatlabama border post, west of Mafikeng, on the Botswana border.

KGASWANE MOUNTAIN RESERVE

The Kgaswane Mountain Reserve is a place of special beauty, an escape into a mountain range of great natural appeal and an ideal destination to take tourists or out of town visitors for a day outing.

Situated above the town of Rustenburg across a varied habitat of quartzite mountain peaks and vleis on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg.

MADIKWE GAME RESERVE

The Madikwe Game Reserve, situated against the Botswana border, 90 km north of Zeerust, just three hours’ drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria, is now one of South Africa’s prime safari destinations. Madikwe is a Big Five game reserve covering some 75,000 hectare. It is one of the largest game reserves in South Africa. The rich diversity of vegetation ensures a wide range of game and the topography offers ideal game viewing opportunities.

MOLOPO GAME RESERVE

The reserve is located on 24 000 hectare against the Botswana border in the far west of the province, 250 km north of Vryburg and 7 km west of the village of Vostershoop.

This remote Kalahari grassland and thornveld reserve is an arid savannah region of undulating grass and thornveld dunes offering a unique wilderness experience to the wildlife enthusiast.

Many of the game and bird species found on the reserve are endemic to the desert regions of South Africa.

PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK

Pilanesberg Game Reserve is in the Bojanala Region of the North West Province, adjacent to Sun City.

Visitors are offered many opportunities to experience the wonders of Pilanesberg. There are nearly 200 kilometres of excellent quality roads for either self-drives or guided drives, and professional guides operate within the park.

Numerous hides and scenic picnic sites enable the tourist to experience “out-of-car” experiences as well.

S.A. LOMBARD NATURE RESERVE

The S.A. Lombard Nature Reserve was one of the earliest wildlife conservation research centres in South Africa and is credited with having saved the black wildebeest from extinction in the wild.

The reserve is an important breeding centre for plains animals, including springbok, black wildebeest, red hartebeest and zebra.

The reserve is located 17 km west of Bloemhof on the R34 to Schweizer Reneke.

VAALKOP DAM NATURE RESERVE

The Vaalkop Dam is situated 54km north of Brits, near Beestekraal and north-east of Rustenburg, in typical broken bushveld country. It is renowned as both an anglers and birdwatching destination.

Fish species include carp and yellowfish which are plentiful, making Vaalkop a particularly attractive angling destination.

WOLWESPRUIT NATURE RESERVE
